Planning For A Safe Return To School In 2020-2021 - Updated 08/05/2020
Thank you for your patience as we have been working through reopening issues over the past several weeks. With guidance from the Florida Department of Education, the local health department, and Clay County District Schools, we have a plan which will help us fulfill our school mission of providing a classical education while keeping our scholars safe and healthy.
In accordance with Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran’s Emergency Order, St. Johns Classical Academy's intention is to begin the 2020-2021 school year operating our traditional brick-and-mortar school five days a week for all scholars. We will offer an innovative learning exception for Junior High and High school scholars in seventh through eleventh grade. A doctor’s note is required that states, “due to a scholar’s (or someone living in their home) medical condition, the scholar should not attend school on campus.” To reiterate, this exception only applies to 7th-11th graders. Innovative learning must be approved by Headmaster Johnson in 30-day increments. The scholar will attend school virtually as if they were on campus. They must be in uniform, be on time for class, and be present for the duration of each live class. Their school day will run from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. They will break for lunch during their assigned lunch period, which is approximately 30 minutes in length. Bathroom breaks should be taken when on-campus scholars change classes; there is a four-minute break between Junior High and High School courses. Teachers will instruct their classes with a camera so that scholars can participate as if in the classroom. They will interact with the teacher and their peers virtually to the fullest extent possible. We will provide a schedule for picking-up books and materials at a later date.
School leadership will closely monitor Clay County District Schools phases and closures due to COVID-19 increases in risk. Plans are in place to react to moderate and high-risk scenarios.
