AFFILIATION WITH HILLSDALE COLLEGE
St. Johns Classical Academy has an Agreement with Hillsdale College that establishes the SJCA within a family of schools that are a part of Hillsdale’s Barney Charter School Initiative.

CONSULTATION WITH HILLSDALE COLLEGE
St. Johns Classical Academy shall look to Hillsdale College as the first and primary source of models, resources, and guidance on the development and operation of Charter School’s academic program, including, without limitation, the academic mission, academic policies, curriculum, and teaching practices, consistent with the terms and conditions of Charter School’s approved charter application. In all instances, the terms and conditions of Charter School’s approved charter application shall control. Hillsdale College may, at Hillsdale College’s discretion, provide advice to SJCA with respect to strategies for the operation of Charter School (including, without limitation, with respect to improving the performance or progress of students attending Charter School); provided, however, the decision whether to implement any particular strategy (whether suggested by Hillsdale College or not) shall be made solely by SJCA, and SJCA shall not be required to implement any strategy suggested by Hillsdale College.

DEVELOPMENT OF CURRICULUM
Hillsdale College shall provide to SJCA a general model for a curriculum of a charter school. Hillsdale College shall provide assistance with the development of the curriculum of Charter School by supplying sample statements of principles, course outlines, suggesting resources, and reviewing and commenting on the proposed curriculum and teaching materials prepared by Charter School. All decisions with respect to the curriculum and teaching materials of Charter School shall be made solely by SJCA and shall be consistent with applicable laws and regulations and with the approved charter application for the Charter School.

SUPPLY LISTS
Supply lists for grades K-10 may be found here.

LUNCH PROGRAM
Lunches must be pre-ordered the day before through our lunch provider here.
If you have not pre-ordered lunch the day before there is no guarantee that there will be a lunch available. Drinks, snacks and candy are available for purchase at the lunch counter daily.

Forgotten lunches may be dropped off for scholars in the reception area of the Multi-Purpose building.

Parents and guardians are welcome to have lunch with their scholars.  All adults must check in upon arriving on campus with a photo identification.  Parents and guardians dining with their scholars are asked to eat at the tables provided outside of the cafeteria.

PLANNERS
All scholars are required to purchase a planner for each school year.  A planner is given to scholars in order to create organization and better communication. With these planners being a part of the classroom experience, scholars are more likely to keep track of their assignments, set personal goals, and enhance communication between teachers, scholars and parents.  Upper school scholars are required to use their school planner as a hall pass. Planners are $10 for lower school and $5 for upper school. Planners may be purchased here.

LOCKERS
Small lockers are provided as a courtesy to our upper school scholars.  There is enough space to secure books and binders when necessary.  Locks are not permitted. Lockers are assigned on a first come first served basis.  Please submit your new scholar request for a locker here.

GRADE BOOK ACCESS
Clay County District Schools use FOCUS in the 2019-2020 school year as an interactive, real-time grade book.  You and your scholar can access FOCUS here.

UNIFORM GUIDELINES
A visual guide to SJCA’s uniform is available here.

Our uniform policy and dress code foster an atmosphere in which SJCA's virtues can thrive: Courage, Honesty, Humility, Integrity, Perseverance, Respect, Responsibility and Wisdom. Daily reinforcement of strong personal habits promotes courtesy, the honor of self and others, modesty, and discipline. Adherence to the code diminishes economic and social barriers between students; increases a sense of belonging and school pride; encourages good judgment; models good citizenship and encourages all to perform at their highest level.

Uniforms and logo wear must be ordered exclusively from Lands’ End by shopping online, or by visiting the Lands’ End department of a Sears store. Returns can also be made at any Sears location.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The primary function of the Board is to uphold and support the vision, mission and philosophy of SJCA. All decisions will be made in light of the mission, philosophy, goals and objectives of SJCA as stated in the Charter Application. This framework document is a touchstone of all decisions made. The Board must ensure the provision of its quality educational program to all students at the school. Every decision or action taken by the Board must be made in the best interest of all SJCA students – not what is in the interest of the Board, or the staff or the parents. The Board is responsible for providing strategic leadership for the school. It must plan for the long-term operation of the school. The Board is responsible for the oversight and approval of fund-raising, grant requests and direct donations.

STJCA BOARD MEETINGS
The SJCA Governing Board Meeting schedule can be found on our school calendar.

SJCA Governing Board minutes can be found on our Meeting Minutes page.

Addressing the Board
Anyone who wishes to address the Board must complete a Public Comment Card and submit it to the Board chair prior to the start of the meeting. Once the Community Comment portion of the meeting begins, no additional cards will be accepted.  You can find more information about addressing the Board here.

COMMUNICATION
The Lion Line
The primary source of Academy-wide communication is our monthly electronic newsletter, The Lion Line. Please visit The Lion Line library for current and previous editions.

Official Facebook Page
SJCA’s official Facebook page can be found here.

Email
Please find all the faculty and staff email addresses located in the About menu under the Staff Directory tab.

      PLEASE NOTE
  • FOCUS is a Clay County School Board system and automatically generates email accounts for Administration and Faculty.  Please connect with our Administration and Faculty through the email addresses provided by SJCA.
  • Under Florida law, e-mail addresses and email contents sent to charter school email accounts are public records. If you do not want your email address and email contents released in response to a public records request, do not send electronic mail to this entity. Instead, contact this office by phone or in writing.

CLUBS
Great after-school programs offer students the time and space to learn and experiment on their own terms. Free from curricular pressures, and classroom periods, educators and volunteers can offer students sustained, deep learning outside the classroom setting. Current list of After-School Clubs can be found here. Club meeting dates and times are available on our school calendar.

ATHLETICS
STJCA has a robust athletic program designed to optimize physical development in our students, while at the same time not detracting from the academic focus of our school.

SJCA’s athletics program is unique in many ways. Our coaching staff is generally made up of our own teachers and volunteer parents.  To put it another way, our coaches make the program all the better because of their passion, dedication, and character.

Current list of Athletic offerings can be found here.

VOLUNTEERS
In order to support the mission and continued success of SJCA, the Academy depends on volunteers. There are many ways to contribute, and opportunities are available all of our scholars' families.

Volunteer Opportunities both on and off Campus include (but not limited to) Adopting a Grade Level, Reading, Copying/ stapling, Grant Writing, Community Donations, Club/ Activity Sponsorship, Supporting Families in Need, and Fundraising.  As events and opportunities are planned by SJCA Administration, all interested volunteers will be notified and given the opportunity to participate.
  • Complete the CCDS Volunteer Registration Form annually.
  • Adhere to SJCA's policies and procedures as outlined in the Volunteer Handbook.
  • Check in upon arrival on campus and provide valid picture identification.
If you have any questions about volunteering, you can contact the SJCA Volunteer Coordinator, Mrs. Phillips.

UPPER SCHOOL HOUSE SYSTEM
The House System is a traditional feature of many European schools in which the school is divided into subunits called "houses." Upon entering the school, each student is assigned to a house, thus providing a focus for group loyalty and camaraderie.

Modeled after Golden View Classical Academy, our House System will split the Upper School (grades 7-12) into four Houses. Each House will contain an equal number of young men and women from all Upper School grades.

In future years, as part of their graduation process, all students exiting 6th grade will go through a special ceremony where their House will be revealed.

The purpose of the Houses is to provide a wide array of opportunities for student involvement and participation, as well as for a widely dispersed student government (with leadership and ambassadorship opportunities for those who seek them out). Within their Houses, students will plan and execute school events, foster mentoring relationships between various grades, and develop unique traditions.

Houses will compete for points throughout the year. Students will earn points for academic achievements, and character awards. At the end of the year, the House with the most points will reign victorious with their emblem and colors proudly displayed in the cafeteria (etc.).

When students graduate, they will have had several years of planning and executive experience. If and when they choose to attend college, they will have the practical knowledge of how to begin clubs and associations, which is one of the core features of strong citizenship. The House System, then, is an education in civics because of the habits it encourages and forms.

Following a Classical theme, each House will be named after an ancient Greek City-State:

• Athens—Just like Athens itself, this House’s emblem will be the Owl of Athens and our Athenians will represent and uphold the virtues of wisdom and democracy. Mrs. Flannagan is the Athenian House Sponsor.

• Sparta—Our Spartans will have the spirits of warriors—always ready and prepared to defend the weak and correct the wrongs of injustice. This House’s emblem will be the famous Spartan helmet. Dr. Gonzalez is the Spartan House Sponsor.

• Corinth—Similar to the column which shares their name, our Corinthians will be solid and bold as they provide the necessary support and stability for our school’s mission to Learn the True; Do the Good; and Love the Beautiful. These individuals will be the Pillars of our community and their emblem will be a Corinthian Column. Ms. Cosme is the Corinthian House Sponsor.

• Delphi—Delphi is often regarded as the birthplace of Ancient Greek diplomacy. As such, Delphic ideals centered on the virtue of discernment, the value of strong alliances, the advantage of fair play, and the importance of perseverance. As the ambassadors of our school, our Delphians will embody these same ideals and their emblem will be the olive branch. Mrs. Siegers is the Delphic House Sponsor.
