Art
Students at St. Johns Classical Academy grades K-8 will also receive instruction in the fine arts via the Core Knowledge sequence. Studying music and the visual arts will teach students to appreciate beauty and equip students with important perspectives on their culture. In keeping with classical education, SJCA will teach music and art largely through an intensive study of technique and through the works of the masters.
In Visual Arts, students will learn about the elements of art, sculpture, portraits, still life, landscapes, photography, architecture, expression and abstraction, works of art from long ago, the Renaissance, Impressionism, Post impressionism, and 20th century sculpture. They will be exposed to Islamic art and architecture, African art, Chinese Art, Japanese Art, and American Art.

Mr. Ross grew up on the Space Coast in Cocoa, Florida, graduated from the University of Central Florida, and currently lives in St. Augustine.
He originally wanted to be a High School English Teacher; however, because his Art teacher recognized his love of creativity, she talked Mr. Ross into changing his college major to Art Education. This turned out to be a very good choice. He has happily taught Art for nearly 25 years, at every age level from Kindergartners to 12th graders, as well as adults. Mr. Ross is a World traveler. He has traveled extensively since he graduated high school mostly to South and Central America, often with just a backpack. More recently, he spent two years teaching at an International school in South Korea, which allowed him to see a good portion of Asia. His interests in the world include Art, History, and Cultures, and more specifically, indigenous cultures. Mr. Ross is thrilled to be teaching at SJCA, and he believes that Art class is the perfect opportunity for students to "learn the true, do the good, and his favorite, to love the beautiful." During the 2018-2019 school year, SJCA Scholars studied the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters of the late 1800’s. Students learned new concepts, practiced a variety of painting techniques, and created an original work of art in the classic Impressionist style.
